Ethics

  • ONE of the following areas of ethical teaching in Christianity:

      - environmental ethics

Environmental ethics in Christianity is a branch of ethical philosophy that explores the moral relationship between humans and the environment, rooted in Christian teachings. It addresses the responsibility of humans to care for and steward the natural world, drawing insights from biblical principles and teachings.

Foundational Principles of Environmental Ethics

Stewardship

Central to environmental ethics in Christianity is the belief in stewardship. This principle is rooted in Genesis 1:26, where God commands humanity to "have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." This stewardship emphasises the responsibility to care for and protect the environment as trustees of God's creation. One example of a Christian organization actively involved in environmental initiatives is the Laudato Si' Movement. This movement, inspired by Pope Francis's encyclical "Laudato Si'," is a global network of Catholics and other Christians committed to caring for our common home. They engage in various activities, such as promoting sustainable lifestyles, advocating for policies that protect the environment, and organizing educational campaigns on ecological issues. The movement emphasizes the interconnectedness of all creation and the need for a holistic approach to environmental stewardship rooted in faith.

Creation Care

Christians view the Earth as a manifestation of God's glory and goodness (Psalm 19:1), leading to a duty to protect and preserve it. This includes churches implementing energy-saving measures and promoting recycling programs to reduce their environmental impact.

Societal Impact and the Principle of Stewardship

Christian environmental ethics also emphasise the interconnectedness of all life forms and the importance of considering the well-being of all creation. Therefore, environmental degradation that harms ecosystems and biodiversity is seen as a violation of the principle of stewardship and love for one's neighbour. Christian conservation groups partnering with local communities in the Amazon rainforest to protect biodiversity and support sustainable livelihoods, recognise the interconnectedness of humans and nature.

Conclusion

Christian environmental ethics call for responsible stewardship of the environment based on biblical teachings. As such, Christians are called to advocate for policies and practices that promote conservation, sustainability, and the protection of God's creation.
